Maine Huts & Trails is a non-profit organization that manages a system of four backcountry eco-lodges and more than 80 miles of trails in Western Maine. We offer off-the-grid, hut-to-hut adventures coupled with comfortable and friendly accommodations.

Maine Huts & Trails provides countless possibilities for outdoor enthusiasts and active travelers of all levels, ages and interests. Delight in one (or two or three) of your favorite activities whether hiking, mountain biking or paddling, swimming, fishing, skiing or snowshoeing. At night, enjoy delicious home-cooked meals prepared with locally-sourced ingredients, warm, comfortable beds and hot showers.

What are the huts like?
Perhaps the best term we’ve found to describe us (so far) is “Boutique Hostel.” Each hut, or eco-lodge, has a main lodge and separate bunkhouses for sleeping. Sleeping accommodations are primarily shared accommodations, featuring different configurations of bunk beds in a variety of bunkroom sizes, though each hut has at least a couple of “private” bunkrooms that host a “double” bunk. The main lodge is where guests will find bathroom and shower facilities, the kitchen, dining and library/common rooms as well as the staff quarters and clean-energy systems that run the hut.

Having these amenities at remote locations along the trails help to manage human impact and provide backcountry access for those seeking a “comfort camping” experience. The huts are attractive, energy-efficient structures designed to blend harmoniously into their natural surroundings. Each hut is off-the grid and features state-of-the-art green energy systems that generate and store their own power through a combination of alternative energy sources. Each facility will accommodate up to forty-four guests and four staff members, providing visitors with hot showers, toilets, comfortable heated bunkrooms plus hearty, home-cooked meals.

How many Huts are there?
Currently we have four huts in operation of our planned twelve backcountry huts. Stratton Brook, our newest hut, opened in December for the winter 2012/13 season. Poplar has been welcoming guests since 2008, Flagstaff saw its first visitors in 2009, and Grand Falls opened in 2010. Over the next decade, with your help, we’ll be building several more huts for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy year-round.

Each hut offers a variety of unique adventures. Picking the best hut for your stay is key. Do not hesitate to call us to help plan your trip.
